Opinions differ on the cause and purpose of the Opium War.  Some argue that it was about the trading of opium, and some believe that Britain was justified to defend its traders and force the Qing to open to international trade.  Please use the documents in Documents Chapter 2 to make an argument on the case: What do you think the Opium War was about?  Why?  You can also use the documents on the Second Opium War in Documents Chapter 4 if you find these helpful.
