Moral Inconsistencies

After doing a self-examination of your moral thinking, write below a brief comment (150-175 words) about the inconsistencies found in your moral reasoning. For example, you cannot be both a relativist and a proponent of universal moral laws; you cannot be a determinist and also believe in moral responsibility. You don’t have to resolve the inconsistencies at this point; merely recognizing them is an important step in the right direction. Do not discuss the same example that I am using here for illustration. Find your own example of an inconsistency in your moral reasoning.

Assignment MUST be typed in MS Word, where you can check grammar and spelling. After completing your assignment in MS Word, save it as Moral Inconsistencies, and submit it as a file attachment.

Moral Example

Based on your reading of Chapter 2, submit an example of either a moral argument, or an ethical informal fallacy, or a moral dilemma (pick one of them) found in your own experience or from newspapers, magazines, or movies. Briefly (150-175 words) explain why you think the situation you are describing is an example of a moral argument, or an ethical informal fallacy, or a moral dilemma. For example, suppose that you choose to give an example of a moral dilemma based on the news you read in the newspaper about this American soldier who has been sent to prison for refusing to go back for a second deployment in Iraq because of his religious beliefs. You must explain why you think this situation is a moral dilemma. You should use chapter 2 to learn the concepts of moral argument, ethical informal fallacy, and moral dilemma. Do not discuss the same example that I am using here for illustration. Find your own example.

Moral Development

Based on your reading of Chapter 3, submit a brief comment identifying the stage of moral development of one person (pick only one) mentioned in the chapters studied so far. Briefly (150-175 words) relate the Kohlberg’s moral development stages to the described behavior of the person you selected; for example you could pick Martin Luther King Jr. (Ch. 1), the subjects of Milgram’s experiment (Ch. 2), Lynndie England (Ch. 3), Adolph Eichmann or the bystanders in the Kitty Genovese case (Ch. 4). If you selected Martin Luther King Jr. you should be able to associate his behavior with the “post-conventional stage” due to his defense of universal moral principles. Lynndie England, on the other hand, can be easily associated with Kohlberg’s “conventional stage” for stating in her defense, after the 2004 Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, I chose to do what my friends wanted me to (Ch. 3, p. 103). Please, don’t use the same individuals I am using here as examples. Justify your answer. Do not pick Martin Luther King Jr. or Lynndie England that I already used here for illustration. Pick your own example among the other people studied in the book.
