Lab assignment

Make certain your charts/graphs and tables correspond with APA formatting and title standards (do not simply submit pasted, unedited SPSS output), delete irrelevant rows or columns, and add/edit variable and attribute labels where necessary. It is only necessary to prepare one assignment per group/pair, but everyone must submit a copy to OnQ, and please make sure both/all names are on the assignment. This assignment is out of a possible 20 points.
1. a) You believe that drug use is correlated with both academic goals and age. Create two one-tailed hypotheses using the following variables: 1. Dependent variable = number of occasions in the past 30 days respondent consumed drugs (legal or illegal and excluding alcohol and tobacco) for recreational purposes (Occ_Dru), independent variable = percentage grade respondent hopes to earn in SOCY211 (SOCY211); 2. Dependent variable = number of occasions in the past 30 days respondent consumed drugs (legal or illegal and excluding alcohol and tobacco) for recreational purposes (Occ_Dru); independent variable = age in years (Age). 2
b) Without checking for outliers, run a correlation matrix which includes all 3 variables and create a matrix table to present findings without redundancy, using asterisk to denote those correlations that are statistically significant. 2
c) First report on both the Pearsons r value and coefficient of determination results directly related to your hypotheses (include all relevant statistics in text). Second, report on Pearsons r and coefficient of determination results for the correlation that was not initially included in your hypotheses (including all relevant statistics in text). Provide a theory explaining significant correlations only. 3
d) Run a scatterplot(s) for only those variable pairs that are significantly correlated. Pay attention to which is the DV and which is the IV when creating your scatterplot(s). Be sure to include appropriate titles. Comment on the noteworthy characteristic(s) of the scatterplot(s) and the implication of such characteristic(s). 2
2. a) Now you want to know how various factors predict the number of alcoholic drinks typically consumed in one sitting or event (Num_Dri)particularly number of occasions in the past 30 days respondent consumed drugs (legal or illegal and excluding alcohol and tobacco) for recreational purposes (Occ_Dru). Create a one-tailed hypothesis using the DV number of alcoholic drinks typically consumed in one sitting or event (Num_Dri), the IV number of occasions in the past 30 days respondent consumed drugs (Occ_Dru), and the control variables income status of family of origin (Income) and academic goals (setting at least one academic goal during the fall academic term) (Aca_Goal). 1
b) Run a linear regression model using the variables listed above (no need to test assumptions). Present the results in a table, using asterisk to denote significant predictors. 2

c) Report the results for the intercept, report results which address your hypothesis and for significant predictors. Include theories for each significant predictor. Which variable is the strongest predictor of number of alcoholic drinks typically consumed in one sitting or event? 3
3. a) Next you want to know how various factors predict the odds of binge drinking when participating in social events (Soc_Binge)particularly engaging in recreational drug use (excluding alcohol and tobacco) while attending, or immediately before attending, social events (Soc_Dru). Create a one-tailed hypothesis using the DV binge drinking when participating in social events (Soc_Binge), the IV sometimes engaging in recreational drug use while attending, or immediately before attending, social events (Soc_Dru), and control variables minority status (Minority) and age in years (Age). 1
b) Run a logistic regression model using the variables listed above (no need to test assumptions). Present the results in a table, using asterisk to denote significant predictors. 2
c) Report results which address your hypothesis, and report the results for the significant predictor(s). Include a theory for the significant predictor(s) only. Which variable is the strongest predictor of the odds of binge drinking when participating in social events? 2
