Essay 2 — Sociology of a Scene
Choose a scene from your everyday life. It could be a trip to a coffee shop, a stroll down city streets, a trip to the gym, a family event, or a ride on the subway. If you are unsure about what a good scene might be to analyze, be in touch by email and you can clear an idea with me. Once you have chosen your scene, I would like you to describe and analyze how it is sociological/how sociology can help you understand what is going on. As with the first paper, I would like you to turn to course concepts, vocabulary, and readings to back up your essay. I strongly suggest that you review the syllabus as a whole and remind yourself of what we have covered, what is most pertinent to your analysis, and what readings might of special interest to you. The Johnson will be of clear help to you. Unlike the first essay, I wont make more specific suggestions since part of what I am testing is your ability to connect course materials to a description and analysis of the scene you have chosen.
Your essay should be 7-10 pp, pages should be numbered, you should have 1 to 1.5″ margins, and you should include a basic bibliography. This essay is worth 40% of your final grade.
