Metaphysics

Here are the instructions for the paper:

Choose any topic that we have covered so far in our course including causality except theism and free will.

Your assignment is to write a very strong argument.  You want to convince a skeptic

that your own view is well supported and not easily refuted.

I suggest the following steps:

1. formulate a thesis, for example, There is never a necessary connection between cause and effect.

2. State a few arguments that support your view.

3. State a few objections to your view.

4. Defend your view against these objectons.

Your paper should be written in a clear, explicit and straight forward style. Make sure that that the final product is easy to understand.

( A philosophy paper typically requires 3 or 4 drafts.)

You must use material from our course. You can use other material, for example, Kripke’s “Naming and Necessity”

but you must make sure that you give credit to other authors, i.e. include footnotes. See the Chicago Manual Style for instructions on footnotes.

This is a position paper, and not a research paper. Your paper will be graded solely based on the quality of the writing and its persuasiveness.

(5-6 pages double spaced) 6 pages is the limit!

Submit your paper using Blackboard. Do not send me your paper as an attachment

to an email. Thanks.
