Community – Saint Leo University develops hospitable Christian learning communities

everywhere we serve. We foster a spirit of belonging, unity and interdependence based on mutual trust and respect to create socially responsible environments that challenge all of us to listen, to learn, to change and to serve.

VIII. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY:

ACADEMIC HONOR CODE

As members of an academic community that places a high value on truth and the pursuit of knowledge, Saint Leo University students are expected to be honest in every phase of their academic life and to present as their own work only that which is genuinely theirs. Unless otherwise specified by the professor, students must complete homework assignments by themselves (or if on a team assignment, with only their team members). If they receive outside assistance of any kind, they are expected to cite the source and indicate the extent of the assistance. Each student has the responsibility to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity and to refrain from cheating, plagiarism, or any other form of academic dishonesty as well as reporting any observed instance of academic dishonesty to a faculty member.

NOTE: The remainder of the Academic Honor Code can be found in the latest edition of the Saint Leo University Academic Catalog. It is your responsibility as a student to read, understand, and follow the Saint Leo University Academic Honor Code.

IX. ATTENDANCE POLICY:

You are expected to log into the class at least 3 times a week and participate with your instructor and classmates.

X. LATE WORK / MAKE UP POLICY:

Work not submitted by the due date will incur a 10% deduction in grade. Exceptions will be made for extenuating circumstances.

XI. POLICY ON PLAGIARISM

As an institute of higher learning, Saint Leo University has a responsibility to ensure that students are not plagiarizing written work while studying at the university. As such, the psychology major requires that all student work in all psychology courses be submitted to TurnItIn.com for verification that students have indeed completed the written assignments without intentionally or accidentally stealing another’s work. Broadly defined, plagiarism is stealing and/or passing off the ideas and words of another as one’s own or using the work of another without crediting the source. Plagiarism in academic environs is typically found in one of two forms: (1) Directly copying the work of another word for word without citing the source or giving the original author credit for the written work; and (2) Minimally altering the work of another by changing a few words in a sentence or a paragraph and then passing the work off as one’s own. Plagiarism in any psychology class WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, and any students caught plagiarizing will be prosecuted to the full extent possible within the university. Sanctions against students found to have plagiarized will normally include a grade of “F” for the course and may involve expulsion from the university for repeated offenses involving the University Academic Honor Code. Bear in mind that this policy on plagiarism also extends to self- plagiarism or submitting work in this class that was completed for the purpose of another course. No form of plagiarism will be tolerated in this class.

XII. PROTECTION OF THE ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

Disruption of academic process is the act or words of a student in a classroom or teaching environment which in the reasonable estimation of a faculty member: (a) directs attention away from the academic matters at hand, such as noisy distractions, persistent, disrespectful or abusive interruptions of lecture, exam or academic discussions, or (b) presents a danger to the health, safety or well being of the faculty member or students. Education is a cooperative endeavor – one that takes place within a context of basic interpersonal respect. We must therefore make the classroom environment conducive to the purpose for which we are here. Disruption, intentional and unintentional, is an obstacle to that aim. We can all aid in creating the proper environment, in small ways (such as turning off beepers and cell phones, and neither chatting nor sleeping in class), and in more fundamental ways. So, when we speak in class, we can disagree without attacking each other verbally, we wait to be recognized before speaking, and no one speaks in a manner or of off-topic content that disrupts the class. Any violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further details.

XIII. SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY’S COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Academic excellence is an achievement of balance and growth in mind, body, and spirit that develops a more effective and creative culture for students, faculty, and staff. It promotes integrity, honesty, personal responsibility, fairness, and collaboration at all levels of the university. At the level of students, excellence means achieving mastery of the specific intellectual content, critical thinking, and practical skills that develop reflective, globally conscious, and informed citizens ready to meet the challenges of a complex world.
