discussion week 5

I HAVE ATTACHED TWO DIFFERENT DISCUSSIONS PLEASE READ AND RESPOND. DO NOT ATTACH BOTH DISCUSSION TOGETHER.

DISCUSSION 1
The other is what society is focused on right now in our world. We live in a place where it is us against them. The other is someone that is different from you. It is a very simple concept. The issue is how our world looks at the other as being the problem. Take the other to lunch is a good idea for building relationships and breaking down misconceptions. I like the word Otherizing (Lesser, 2010). I think it offers an idea of when we otherize people not like us. When you catch yourself otherizing, stop, and then maybe take that person you were doing it to, to lunch. We can break down walls when we come at communication from a point of wanting to learn. Do not take the other to lunch to prove your side, do it to gain knowledge of theirs. This is where we are in America today. We need to see the other and help them see us. It does not matter what side you are on. All sides gain and grow if we come at it as truly wanting to know and understand the other.

Ireland is the first country I picked. If my business was going to Ireland it might want to think about the pub culture. My business is substance use disorder counseling so maybe it fits for some in Ireland. Pub culture is one of the countrys defining customs and characteristics (Callan, 2020). Some of the most authentic local experiences can be had in an Irish pub, like music and Guinness. My culture is also the culture is recovery so none of this would fit my earlier days. Next I looked at how jigs, reels, step dancing, and ceili dances all make up this inherently Irish dance style. Many think of the River Dance as the main Irish dance.

One thing that would not be appropriate would be to call Guinness a beer. This is considered an insult and should be avoided.  Because the pub culture is important, it would not be good to call the Irish a bunch of drunks. I dont like stigmatizing language anyway so it is simple to avoid.

Iran is about as far off from Irish as I could find. Of course, if we truly looked at the other maybe they are closer than we think? For this paper Im looking at the difference. The vast majority of Iranians are Muslims (Afary, 2020).  To conduct business with Iranian people, there are some important rules for etiquette and customs that should be observed. These are things like a common greeting salaam alaykum or more simply salaam meaning peace. Our American whats up would not be the best fit. When meeting people in Iran introductions are generally restricted to members of the same sex. Men and women socialize separately in the Iranian culture. A huge mistake in this culture would be to walk up and huge a female when meeting them.

Looking at similarities is something I wish we could all do more. Irish or Iranian, they love family, home and religion. They work hard to build lives for those they love. They want to be allowed to live as they see fit to raise their children and help them be successful. I think we can all agree that most cultures have things mo9r in common than maybe we think about.

Take the other to lunch. I love it.

DISCUSSION 2
Lesser, E. (2010) stated, Martin Luther King wrote, I cant never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality. She went on to quote another mystic warrior, Mother Theresa, she stated, The problem of the world is that we draw the circle of our family too small. And to conclude her quotes, she stated Nelson Mandela, I need you in order to be me and you need me in order to be you. All cultures are demonizing the other by the voices we are giving by the most devices amongst us. Elizabeth went on to say we should bring the other to lunch. There are no shortage of the other in our own neighborhood. At this present moment we are campaigning to remove this president out of office. The world has had enough and we must have him removed in order to move on in a better, respectful, and peaceful environment. The world is in chaos and simply has lost her values and morals. We have two tickets that we all know are the primary for this upcoming election. I cant for the love of God understand why there is an other. The Progressives are trying to prove a point to all of Americans. The most important election ever and they still dont get the big picture. I had a conversation with the other and she is Bernie Sanders follower and supporter. She states her views publicly and on social media. I asked her, Take the other to lunch is a good idea for building relationships and breaking down misconceptions. (Lesser, 2010).  Can we have a conversation without killing each other? She asked me to give her a reason to vote for the Biden ticket other than trump is a ruthless, disrespectful, uncompassionate, and heartless person. Speak about your policy platform. There are 100,000,000 non-voters that dont vote and yet hes banking on Republicans to switch sides. We talked for over an hour about both views and our feelings about how the world has everyone in their feelings. I asked the question to her, Do you honestly think this was his game plan all alone to get the other parties totally against each other? She looked up at me in a stare. The conversation was very good and we both had valid points to why we stand on our beliefs. I learned in a crucial confrontation class I took a few years ago that, policies, systems, programs – any method for encouraging change— will never function fully until people know how to talk to one another about deviations and disappointments. Change calls for new expectations, and like it or not, new expectations eventually will be violated. If you can’t confront those who fail to live up to the new promises, no memo, no policy, and no system will ever make up for the deficiency. (p.12, 13). According to experts, a substantial portion of our communication is nonverbal. Every day, we respond to thousands on nonverbal cues and behaviors including postures, facial expression, eye gaze, gestures, and tone of voice. From our handshakes to our hairstyles, nonverbal details reveal who we are and impact how we relate to other people.

The two cultures that are dissimilar to mine are the Australian and Canadian cultures. Australia and Canada have many commonalities. Both are Commonwealth nations, have the Queen of England as their Head of State, control the majority of the world’s uranium reserves, have a very large migrant population, have low density populations, have an official policy of multiculturalism and both have a strong left-wing element that defines its identity with anti-American rhetoric. Both Canada and Australia have a national day that provokes a diverse range of emotions. Canada Day is celebrated on July 1. This is the anniversary of the signing of the Canadian confederation on July 1, 1867. Australia Day is celebrated on the 26th of January. This is the anniversary of the first fleet of criminals arriving in 1788. While most Aussies make a great point of living ‘Down Under’, it’s only a few rare Canadians who take pride in living ‘Up Over’. Culturally, Australians tend to be more casual and more carefree than their Canadian cousins, who tend to be more cautious and intense in their orientation. Australians tend to be more irreverent and dismissive of authority than Canadians who are generally compliant and respectful. Australians tend to swear and curse more than Canadians, and this is socially more acceptable than in Canada. Culturally, Canadians tend to be extremely polite and well manneredprobably more than average Australians. Taboo subjects in Australia, avoid topics like race, religion, politics and sex until you know them better.  Canada is a multicultural society, and the customs of businesspeople may reflect their ethnic background. Canada is a very open-minded country, exercising maximum social tolerance. Religion in general, although Canada is very tolerant of most religions. To sum it all up, The difference between Australia and Canada is the difference between tolerance and acceptance.
