1.  What qualities must a successful woman possess according to Lydia Maria Child?  What was the purpose of possessing such qualities?
2. How did she describe women who did not possess any qualities?  What was the larger significance of lacking qualities?
3. Child was a women’s rights activist, an abolitionist, and a Native American rights activist.  Do you think this selection contradicts that description?  Why or why not?
